Abstract

This presentation begins with Luciana, who will present ongoing projects from the Semiotic Engineering Research Group at UFF on Computer Education, Human-AI Interaction, and Cultural Issues in HCI. Following her, Vinícius Pereira will discuss key topics from his research group, including Semiotics and Linguistics in HCI, Digital Literature, and Digital Arts, outlining his group’s interdisciplinary approach. Finally, Mateus will present his research on operationalizing politeness using Conversation Analysis and Pragmatics. He will cover the development of a card-based approach, its evaluation, and the key challenges that remain for this research.

Speakers’ bio

Dr. Luciana Salgado is an Associate Professor at the Computer Science Department of Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and heads the Semiotic Engineering Research Group affiliated with SERG (PUC-Rio). Her research interests span various areas within Human-Computer Interaction, including Cultural and Gender issues, Semiotic Engineering Theory, E-Health, and Social Computing. Luciana is actively involved in professional organizations such as the Brazilian Special Committee of Human-Computer Interaction (CEIHC) and serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal on Interactive Systems (JIS). She holds a Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction and a Master’s in Informatics, bringing a wealth of academic and industry experience to her role.

Dr. Vinícius Pereira is a Doctor and Master of Literature from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He graduated with a Bachelor’s and Teaching degree in Portuguese-English at UFRJ. Currently, an Associate Professor at the Department of Letters and the Postgraduate Program in Language Studies at the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT). Vinícius has significant experience in academia and research, including a postdoctoral internship at the University of Nottingham in the UK. He leads research groups focusing on contemporary Semiotics and Data Beyond Life, and has held various academic leadership roles at UFMT.

Dr. Mateus Monteiro holds a doctorate in Computer Science (2024) and a master’s degree in Computer Science (2020) from Fluminense Federal University (UFF). He also earned a degree in Information Systems (2016) from the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT, 2016). With expertise in Human-Computer Interaction, Mateus has worked extensively on projects in this field and currently serves as a Product Designer at Viasat since 2021. His research interests span various areas within Human-Computer Interaction, including Chatbots, Cultural and Language issues, Semiotic Engineering Theory, Social Computing, and Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI).
